A Memory of Lake Malawi

One of my favourite Malawi memories. ♥️

I took this in Karonga, Northern Malawi, on the morning of my 37th birthday. I’d been up all night celebrating with people I’d only just met, carried by the kind of Malawian hospitality that makes you feel instantly at home.

Before I went to sleep it off, I stood alone to watch the sunrise. A quiet moment of reflection after all the laughter and music. I do this a lot.

The sun shines differently in Malawi

Meanwhile, miles away, South Africa was reeling under Covid. Yet here in Malawi, life felt untouched, and suspended, at least for me because Malawians may have been having a different experience.

I missed home, yes. But more than anything, I felt grateful to be alive, and to keep seeing the rest of Africa unfold before me.

What I had walked away from to find myself here was disappearing from my mind with every new thing I was seeing.
