Chale Wote Festival 2018 – Ghana

Every year in August, Jamestown Ghana throws one of the biggest street festivals in West Africa; the Chale Wote Street Festival. In August 2018, I was fortunate to be in Ghana when the festival took place. The festival is a medley of music, fashion, food and all things urban art. The energy is as eclectic the costumes worn by participants.

This festival attracts both local and international artists who come to showcase their talents, be it graffiti and murals or performance arts. There are also film screenings by talented local film makers. Perhaps the oddest part of the festival for me was seeing extreme sports such as boxing playing a big part of the festival. Locals were enthralled by this. I was told that there is no Chale Wote without those short boxing matches.

Chale Wote is, in essence, one big block party. You basically walk down the street enjoying music, food and in your most flamboyant get-up.

 It’s a party yo!
