Places To Stay: Sani Pass Resort, Southern Drakensberg

The lesser explored Southern Drakensberg is one of South Africa’s grandest treasures, with an equal measure of wonder and serenity. Many travellers are inclined to explore the more frequented central and northern parts of the Drakensberg while missing out the quiet charm of the south. The Southern Drakensberg is made up of small towns and tourist communities such as Underberg, Himeville and Sani Pass which will entice you with some of the most spectacular mountain views.

If what you’re looking for is a slow-paced mountain resort experience, immerse yourself in all that this part of ‘The Berg” has to offer. Just over 200km drive from Durban and a mere 130 km from Pietermaritzburg you suddenly find yourself in a mountainous utopia. In this beautiful part of the country, you will find one of South Africa’s best kept secrets; the Premier Resort Sani Pass or just simply Sani Pass Resort.

You will find the resort located in plain sight just off the main road from Underberg towards Lesotho. Sani Pass resort is incredibly popular for family retreats, reunions and couple getaways. People even book just come and witness the snow, as the area snows sees quite a lot of snow annually. The entire area usually transforms into a winter wonderland, attracting visitors from all over the country.

The rooms are restfully furnished with comfortable beds and all the amenities that you could possibly need for your stay. My favourite was the workstation which was exactly what I needed to get a bit of work done. The rooms come in different sizes and preferences. They come in Standard, Executive, Family, Superior Rooms and Suites. I had the absolute pleasure of being booked in the Superior Room for my 39th birthday. The superior rooms come with the breathtaking views of the lush golf course and as you look further up, mountains beckon, in a directions.

I’m not sure how the resort has managed to create a balance between luxury and accessibility but I can tell you that it works. Whether you’re planning your baecation or a family reunion, Premier Resort Sani Pass will deliver. Even as a solo, budget traveller, I felt right at home. Unfortunately during my travels in Underberg, I hurt my ankle and couldn’t move much, because of this, my stay was pretty much me relaxing elevating my foot.

If you’re planning on exploring the Sani Pass, make this resort your accommodation of choice. They can book 4×4 excursions for you. While you’re there you can also have access to horse trails that will take you to Lesotho or if, like me, you’re a little less adventurous you could bask around the pool with a drink in hand. Did I mention that the resort has an unrivaled indoor heated pool?

The resort also has a golf course, table tennis, chess, snooker and if you want to wind down with some bass fishing the resort is also able to arrange that for you. I guess what I’m saying is that Premier Resort Sani Pass is your one-stop shop for your fun and adventure activities.

Very soon the resort will be adding a beauty spa, cinema and gym to their fabulous activities.

Here’s a disclaimer: I am not a foodie type of traveller so I often say less about the food and more about how it was served. The in-house Maluti Restaurant served delightful meals with generous portions. I was particularly pleased with the lunch menu. The restaurant offers themed dinner meal options with a delectable desert. I battled a bit with the customer service but it wasn’t enough to ruin my luxury mountain resort experience. I would certainly go back again and I haven’t stopped recommending the place. Of course, there is also an in-house bar if you fancy a night cap.

My stay at the Premier Resort Sani Pass, was absolutely wonderful. I’d heard some beautiful stories about the work done by the resort to uplift the surrounding communities. I was looking forward to meet with some staff members who have knowledge of the history of the area and the resort, but I wasn’t able to. When I go back I will have to start with that.

In 2022, if your travels take you to the Southern Drakensberg make sure you stay at Sani Pass Resort, you will not regret it.
